Dartmouth Museum is delighted to be supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund

Volunteering for Dartmouth Museum

At a loose end? Got time to spare? Come and volunteer for Dartmouth Museum and have fun! You don't need to be retired! You just need to be able to give some of your time, sometimes. You need to become a member, too, but that's easy! Oh yes, there's no pay!

Look at some of the volunteering jobs we have available:

I want to be a Steward

Our stewards are all volunteers, just like you. They have an enthusiasm for Dartmouth and its history. They have, usually, no specialised knowledge, they just pick it up. We do it in pairs, though we'd love to have room stewards at busy periods, too. Stewards are friendly folk who like to meet people and talk about the museum, the town, the artefacts and who make our visitors feel at home. There's training, camaraderie and fun. Email dartmouth@devonmuseums.net and let us know you're interested. The subject line is pre-filled in for you. Or phone us. Tell us that you want to volunteer. The number is 01803 832923 and it's manned during our opening hours. Otherwise there's an answering machine.

I could make your Web Site even better

Could you? Would you? That would be great. The current design is our very first design and it was a race to get it online. Of course it isn't perfect. It looks a little old fashioned. Nothing's set in stone apart from the basic information on it. That's picked up pretty well by search engines. If you can do a better job of design, and we're sure you can, and you want to offer us this service, please get in touch. There's no budget, though! All it has to be at the end of your work is easy for our webmaster to maintain. Email dartmouth@devonmuseums.net and let our webmaster know. If you prefer to phone, the number is 01803 832923 and it's manned during our opening hours. Otherwise there's an answering machine.

I'd like to Tweet for the Museum

We love our Twitter presence, and we'd love you to be part of it. You need to understand how and why we use Social Media, of course, and be able to talk in 'our voice', that's a given. Here's what we need from you:

  • A nodding acquaintance with what Twitter is and why it's important. Don't worry, we'll help you know it better
  • A light, chatty manner
  • A love of gossip, as long as you keep it clean!
  • Ability to join in with things and chat to people in 140 characters or fewer, and to be wise enough to know when to stay silent!
  • Adequate computer ability. You don't need to be a megastar, you can use your smartphone or iPad, too
  • A few minutes on most days
  • A love of Dartmouth and the Museum
  • Be happy to do this from home
  • Be allergic to silly Twitter contracted words. Mch btr 2 use big wrds!

Please apply by email. Use as many or as few snippets of 140 characters or less as you think is right to tell us why you will be good at the role. We know this sounds daft, but don't use Twitter itself to apply - we might miss it and that would upset you.

I'd like to make the Museum's Facebook page even better

Facebook is something we use for meatier things that Twitter. We're pleased with it, but it can always be better. Take a look. We'd love you to be part of it. You need to understand how and why we use Social Media, of course, and be able to talk in 'our voice', that's a given. Here's what we need from you:

  • A Facebook account of your own, even if you lock it down to be 100% private. You will use this to co-manage our page.
  • Reasonable keyboard accuracy. You can be a one finger typist, but we prefer you to type, not to tripe!
  • A basic understanding of what Facebook is for in a commercial sense
  • A few minutes on most days
  • A light, chatty manner.
  • Adequate computer ability.
  • A love of Dartmouth and the Museum
  • The ability to write reasonable copy that will draw people into our conversations
  • The inspiration to create articles about us and other local things
  • The ability to join in with Facebook conversations, and the wisdom to know when not to.
  • Be happy to do this from home

Please apply by email. Create one or more articles as if being posted on Facebook to tell us why you will be good at the role.

I have a skill to offer

"I'm not sure what you need, but I have some skills that I'd like to offer you. I know it'd be as a volunteer and that there's no budget." If that's you then emailing dartmouth@devonmuseums.net will reach us. If you prefer to phone, the number is 01803 832923 and it's manned during our opening hours. Otherwise there's an answering machine.
